LAKE OKAREKA VOLUNTEER RURAL FIRE FORCE

It finally appears that our extended summer weather may have come to an end, with the more typical winter days upon us. Ice on the roads is one hazard we all need to be aware of, especially the last right-hand bend as you approach the straight heading towards the Blue Lake. The camber on this corner is off-set and, when combined with a wet/icy road, special care is needed. Last year, the bush on the left-hand side resembled a parking lot on one particular morning.

A great night was had by all at the inaugural “Neighbours Day” event, held late March. Overall, $700 was raised for the fire force. Thank you to all those who participated and also those who, although they could not make it on the night, still made a donation – very much appreciated. Special thanks to Julie Burne and Cathy Lines for organising this wonderful event (roll on the next one!).

Most of our call-outs this season have been for fallen trees – one through the roof of a house, and another one brought down power lines and a power pole on Okareka Loop Road. Thanks to Peter Harding for his quick actions in relation to the power lines across the road, preventing any people inadvertently driving into them. Loop Road was closed for quite some time with traffic being diverted through Calder Road. We also notified the pre-school as the power was down for the rest of the day and there was no alternative for heating the hall.

You may have noticed the new drive at the fire station. Great to see it finally done. No more sweeping the mud out of the shed. Thanks to Mijo Katavic for getting the ball rolling on this one!!

Finally, thank you to Christine Tyler from TACTS for donating her time to complete the end of year financial accounts for the Lake Okareka Fire Force.

For anyone who is interested in joining the brigade or wanting to contact us, please don’t hesitate to phone me on 362 8874.

Phil Muldoon
Chief Fire Officer
